Eco-Column Lab:
Description: This lab experiment was assigned to us mid into the first quarter of the school year. Ms. Eggerman gave us the task of designing and then building a sealed ecosystem with soda bottles for organisms to live in. First we researched what made an ecosystem successful, second we designed the layout, third we built the structure, and lastly we found organisms for each level of the ecosystem (4 levels). We then observed the structure and its organisms on a weekly basis for a few months.
Significance: I felt like this experiment was important because it allowed students to engage in a hands-on activity that taught us how an ecosystem works. We had to watch as our efforts were put into action when we officially sealed off the independent system. If we designed our structure poorly, our organisms inside the ecosystem would not survive long.
Impact: I did not know how an ecosystem exactly worked before. I knew that the general system was organized in the following order: Producers > Primary Consumers > Secondary Consumers > Decomposers. However, this lab showed me in full detail how organisms interact with one another.

Wanted Poster - Tropical Soda Apple
Description: The Wanted Poster was an independent project about creating a flyer in order to educate other classmates on an intrusive/nonnative species. We were given questions on the flyer and our answers were to be the information. Significance: I consider this project important because it educated us about intrusive species. For the AP test, we might be required to provide examples of intrusive species and their characteristics. This assignment allows us to answer those questions if they were to show up. Impact: I did not know how harmful intrusive species could be before this project. The document to the left is about my intrusive species, the Tropical Soda Apple. I learned that even though it is an intrusive species, it can still provide some benefits such as feeding cattle with its spherical fruit. |
